America's #1 Selling Low Cab Forward Truck Every Year Since 1986

Question:
I am a tractor trailer/straight truck driving instructor. We are revising our training manuals. Since we still have early '90's Isuzu 4BD2-TC in our fleet, a question came up if we should include in that manual the same procedures and techniques we train our drivers to follow for a front tire blow out on a tractor trailer and straight truck.

We train our heavy weight truck drivers (26000lbs GVWR and higher) to quickly go to the accelerator to keep the truck going straight ahead, steer, and then once the truck is in control slowly back off the accelerator, do not down shift, light careful use of the breaks to come to a stop. This is a proven method to keep control of the truck in this situation.

The question that came up was, is this method valid for light weight cab over trucks such as our 4BD2-TC's. Some of our instructors thought that they had information that this method is not a good idea for a light weight vehicle and that a driver should get off the accelerator, steer to get the truck in control, and use light application of the breaks to come to a safe stop.

If you have information that would shed some light on this please let us know. If not we will try to find an independent study for light weight trucks.

Answer:
Sorry, I have no formal information. However, it is my experience that the second case is correct. The important thing is to stay off the brakes, get vehicle in control and slow the vehicle to a stop with light pressure on the brake.
