The main reason for using dampers is to reduce the torsional vibration over the range of operating speeds. However, different types of dampers have unique characteristics which require tradeoffs when designing an engine.

It is well known that viscous dampers (VD) have better durability than rubber damper (RD) systems. It is also well known that rubber dampers have the ability to separate the steep peaks to two moderate peaks.

A viscous rubber damper (VRD) has the features of both viscous and rubber dampers. A smaller damper results when using viscous rubber dampers in engine design. The use of smaller dampers allow the engine designer more flexibility when choosing between tradeoffs.

The Isuzu 6H uses a viscous rubber damper.
