Isuzu Truck of America, Inc. began
operations March 16, 1984. At that
time, the American commercial
truck market was introduced to a
new corporate mark. The twin pillars
of Isuzu’s original logo represented
the two facets of Isuzu’s corporate
philosophy: that Isuzu grows in harmony with society
and grows with people. Twenty-five years later, that
philosophy is recognized as the foundation of our
SEE philosophy that we follow today.
2000
New FRR models introduced with 18,000 lbs. and 19,500 lbs. GVW
ratings. NQR GVW is increased up to 17,950 lbs.
2001
January - Isuzu introduces the diesel-powered crew cab.
2002
Isuzu truck sales in the United States exceed 275,000 units.
2003
2003-I new gas N/W-Series models introduced with 6.0L Vortec V8
engine rated at 300 HP. This replaces the original 5.7 liter V8.
New MZZ six/speed manual overdrive transmission released in NQR.
FRR receives the new Allison 1000 series automatic transmission.
2004
F-Series production begins in Flint, MI. for the FTR, FVR and FXR.
2005
The 50,000th N/W-Series Gas model is built in Janesville during April
of this year.
New emission 4/cylinder electronic control engine with higher HP and
torque ratings installed in diesel N/W-Series.
The new NRR/W5500 model is introduced for Class 5 with 19,500 lbs.
GVW.
The F-Series equipped with A/T receives an increase to 300 HP.
2006
N/W-Series has a fresh new look with cab exterior panels updated. New
interior color and upholstery. ISO switch and indicator labels on instrument
panel. Rear engine cover installed. Power windows and power door
locks are now standard.
Isuzu meets the upcoming 2007 new diesel emissions standards with
proven, field-tested technology that complies with reduced NOx and PM
emission requirements.
2007
January – The all-new 2008 model year N/W-Series is introduced at the
national dealer organization meeting in Las Vegas, NV. 2008 model year
marks a full model change to the new 700P cab and chassis, with increased
HP and torque on the diesel engine and new 6/speed Aisin A465 automatic
transmission (Diesel models). Also introduced is the New Gen Four gas
engine for Gas models and the new Gas Crew Cab. ICTA introduces the
SEE philosophy. Safety. Economy. Environment.
The Gas Crew Cab is revealed to the public at the Green Industry Expo,
Louisville, KY.
2008
Isuzu extends its SEE philosophy by staging Fuel Economy Challenges
throughout the U.S. This strategy demonstrates Isuzu’s commitment to
provide solutions that translate into results, economies and savings for
fleets and independent truck operators.
The 2009 model year Isuzu N/W-Series trucks are so efficient they
meet and exceed the current emissions standards. (2008 model certified
engines above 14,500 lbs. GVW are 50-state emissions certified and do
not require idle shutdown)
2009
Isuzu trucks are helping to reduce the world’s dependence on oil
through advanced powertrain development. All Isuzu truck diesel engines
feature common rail fuel injection, variable geometry turbo chargers, and
advanced combustion system designs for maximum fuel efficiency.
Isuzu engines have been proven to meet the needs of society and customers
for super-clean power sources that reduce environmental impact.
In 2010, Isuzu trucks will feature a new class of diesel engines to meet the
most stringent emissions standards in the world.

1990
4th Qtr 1990, Budget accepts delivery of the 5000th
Isuzu N-Series truck.
1991
April 1991, new engine technology w/indirectinjection
is introduced for the 1992 model line. The
4/cylinder diesel will feature new turbo intercooled
technology. The 6/cylinder diesel will feature the
unique TICS system and redesigned piston heads.
1992
New 4BD2-TC engine with turbo intercooler is
rated at 135 horsepower at 2800 RPM.
November 18, 1992 the NPR EFI is introduced to
19 California dealers at the San Diego Port with a
dealer drive-away of the first models. California
dealers accept first deliveries.
The consumer testimonial ad campaign series is
introduced.
1993
Winter 1993, the 100,000th Isuzu truck is sold by
Illinois Truck Centre. The truck was a NPR EFI.
The “Working Class Hero’s” ad campaign is launched.
1994
February 9, 1994, the first American-built NPR EFI rolls off the assembly
line in Janesville, WI.
March 17, 1994 the FRR is launched at the Mid America Truck Show
in Louisville, KY.
On June 2, 1994 Budget accepts delivery of the 10,000th Isuzu N-Series
truck.
July 1994, the 6HE1-TC diesel engine is introduced.
1995
1995.5 N/W-Series models receive the new Aero Cube Cab. This model
is introduced as “The New Shape of Success.”
F-Series receives the heavy-duty 6/cylinder 200 HP and 230 HP diesel
engines.
1996
1996 model year marks some significant changes for the N/W-Series
chassis. The frame is widened 4” from 29.5” to 33.5”. This feature increased
standard GVW from 11.050 lbs. to 12,000 lbs. The standard rail mounted
fuel tank is repositioned between the rails in the rear of the chassis. Rails
are now straight-channel and standard width, and are free of rivets, providing
a smooth surface. The battery box is moved forward. The rear axle
width widens from 60” to 65”. The front and rear leaf spring spans
increase in length.
1997
The FSR, FTR, and FVR with new style cab are now assembled in
Janesville, WI.
1998
September - Isuzu introduces the 6HK1-TC engine for F-Series trucks.
1999
New heavy-duty 4/cylinder direct injection engine introduced in the
NPR diesel models – 142 HP with manual transmission, and 175 HP with
automatic transmission. New heavy-duty Aisin automatic transmission
introduced in N/W-Series diesel models. NPR HD/W4500 model introduced
with 14,500 lbs. GVW. New NQR model introduced with 175 HP
diesel engine and a GVW of 16,500 lbs.

1984
The first KS22 truck arrived in the Port of
Jacksonville, Florida on November 10, 1984. Vehicle
was VIN#: JAMJP7468F9400054. During 1984,
Isuzu wholesaled 542 and retailed 139 low cab forward
KS22’s (87hp naturally aspirated, manual transmission,
w/non tilt cab trucks) These trucks delivered to the
dealer for $9999.00. Dealer sales were a simple transaction
– no retail assistance, no fleet assistance, no programs,
just a quality product at a competitive price.
Duvall Isuzu, Jacksonville, FL sold the first KS22
in the U.S. to a pest control business in Jacksonville.
Isuzu’s Charter Dealer meeting was held in
Las Vegas, NV, September 29, 1984. 67 dealers
from 19 states attended.
1985
Isuzu imported 1300 KS22’s during 1985. More
than 1200 were sold that year. The NPR was introduced
mid-1985 with turbo charged 4/cylinder 3.9L
(116 HP) diesel engine.
1986
Isuzu’s first sales incentive program was “Money
Bowl ’86.” This program was so successful a second
program was launched “Team Up for Cash.” Isuzu
introduced their corporate philosophy, “The
Customer is First.” Mid 1986, Isuzu’s “Smart Buy”
advertising campaign was introduced, “We had to be
Smarter.” This campaign was launched in the Fleet
markets.
The Amazing Tales campaign was introduced to
the retail markets to establish Isuzu brand awareness
featuring the vehicle’s dependability and maneuverability.
3rd Qtr 1986, FSR is introduced to the American
Market. 4th Qtr 1986, Isuzu Truck of America begins
distribution of the Forward Tiltmaster (W-Series) and
F-Series for GM and Chevrolet commercial truck
dealers.
1987
R.L. Polk statistics identify Isuzu leading top
import commercial truck registrations of 10,000 lbs.
GVWR for 1986. The runners-up were Mercedes-
Benz and Mack Midliner.
1988
June 1988, Budget has 1000 N-Series units in its
Fleet. HP of the 4/cylinder diesel increased to 126 HP.
The FTR and FVR models were introduced. Late
fall 1988 the two-millionth N-Series truck rolled off
the assembly line in Japan, making this series truck
the top ranking truck in the worldwide market for
18 consecutive years.
1989
February marked the beginning of sales for the
18,000 lb. NRR. During June, the NPR Flatlow was
introduced.
R.L. Polk statistics report Isuzu-built trucks now
dominate 30% of the U.S. market. July 30th and
August 1st Isuzu introduces the ’90 model line-up at
Isuzu’s 5th Anniversary celebration in San Fransico, CA.
Isuzu Commercial Truck Celebrates 25 Years in the U.S. Market

Isuzu Commercial Truck of America (ICTA) has celebrated the 25th anniversary of Isuzu trucks in the U.S. market with a ceremony at the American Truck Dealers convention. The first Isuzu truck, a KS-22, arrived in America in March 1984 with a retail price of $9,995. Still operational, the truck has been restored for display purposes.
Isuzu trucks have been the best-selling low cab forward brand in the U.S. every year since 1986. Of the 400,000 Isuzu-built diesel trucks sold in North America since their first arrival, more than 83 percent are still registered and in service today.
At the ceremony marking the event, Kazuya Igeta, President of ICTA said “Isuzu is proud of this milestone. It is an excellent match to Isuzu’s worldwide heritage and commitment to quality.”
Shaun Skinner, Executive VP and General Manger added, “Our success has come from not only a great product, but also the dedication of our U.S. dealers to support this line in order to deliver the lowest cost of ownership possible.”
Isuzu low cab forward trucks are distributed through 205 Isuzu truck dealers and 350 GM W-Series dealers nationwide. Isuzu holds more than 70% market share of the total LCF market.
